Edith Cupper
Edith Cupper, born in Reading, in 1984 is an artist and mathematician with a love of geometry. Having spent years doodling in 2-point perspective she eventually started to build the doodles into imaginary landscapes. They usually begin with a simple cuboid which is then sculpted into an object, and in turn grows a setting and sometimes a population, of a kind.
The seed of her work today was sown when her graphics teacher taught her to draw simple objects in 2-point perspective, but her early work was entirely focused on portraiture. Edith moved to Kent in 2005, and during this time completed a maths degree with the Open University. This included a module where tessellation and symmetry featured heavily, which cemented a love of geometry.
Her work today includes collages, oil-paintings, and mixed-media works depicting a selection of mysterious objects and spaces- evoking the beauty of the alien- and abstract compositions built on mathematical patterns.
