Bob Matthews

Bob Matthews lives and works in London.

Working with archives is central to his practice. Recent work examines the complexity and formation of collections, and the role artworks can play in revealing new connections across disparate sources, bringing together elements and artifacts from physical and online collections. Past work has explored the hidden world of communes and communities that live outside the mainstream, and the impact and traces this has left on the landscape and environment.

Matthews grew up in Dorset and studied at the Royal College of Art. He has had numerous international solo exhibitions with Gregory Lind Gallery, San Francisco as well as others with the National Museum of Singapore, Herbert Read Gallery, Aisa House, Domo Baal Gallery, Keith Talent Gallery, Pittville Gallery and Forest Arts. He was the inaugural British Council Artist in Residence in Singapore.

He has presented work nationally and internationally in public galleries including; Bluecoat Gallery, Cell Project Space, China Academy of Arts, Gasworks Gallery, Jerwood Gallery, Kunstmuseum Reutlingen,  Lenbachhaus Munich, The London Library, Museum of Contemporary Art Hangzhou, Museu da Cidade/Pavilhao Preto Lisbon, Museum of Fine Art Dunkerque, NIV Art Centre New Delhi, Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Quad Gallery, Royal Academy of Art, Times Museum Beijing, Vargas Museum Philippines, Wolverhampton City Art Gallery.

His work is held in public and private collections throughout Europe, Asia and the United States, including the Aspen Museum of Contemporary Art, Government Art Collection, Singapore International Foundation, Tate Gallery Archive and the Victoria & Albert Museum. His work has been reviewed and profiled in various publications, including Art Monthly, Flash Art, Frieze, the Guardian, the Independent, Metro, Modern Painters, The New York Times, Tema Celeste and Time Out.
